Popular Superstitions: Burning of the ear (colour litho)
8668718 Popular Superstitions: Burning of the ear (colour litho) by English School, (20th century); Private Collection; (add.info.: Burning of the ear. The idea that a burning or tingling of the ear means that one is being talked about originates from an ancient belief that the ear was thus affected by sounds which were conveyed considerable distances by some mystic agency. This is mentioned by Pliny, who "supposed it to have proceeded from the notion of a signifying genius, or universal mercury that conducted sounds to their distant subjects and taught to hear by touch." It is also said that if the right ear burns, you are being talked of kindly, but if the left ear burns, then the reverse is the case. This originates from the old belief that the Right is lucky, the Left unlucky, a belief which enters into many other superstitions. EDITORS COMMENTS
This colour lithograph print captures the intriguing superstition of the burning of the ear, a belief that has been passed down through generations. The image depicts a person holding their ear in discomfort, symbolizing the idea that when your ear burns or tingles, it means someone is talking about you.
Dating back to ancient times, this superstition stems from the belief that sounds could be conveyed over great distances by some mystical force. Pliny mentioned this phenomenon in his writings, attributing it to a "signifying genius" or universal mercury that carried sounds to their intended recipients.
According to tradition, if your right ear burns, it signifies that people are speaking kindly of you. Conversely, if your left ear burns, it suggests negative talk is being directed towards you. This distinction between right and left ears reflects the broader superstition that the right side is lucky while the left side is unlucky.
Originally featured as one of 25 cigarette cards on Popular Superstitions issued by Godfrey Phillips in 1930, this illustration offers a fascinating glimpse into folklore and beliefs from days gone by. The intricate details and vibrant colours bring this age-old superstition to life in a visually striking manner.
