Popular Superstitions: The howling of a dog at night (colour litho)
8668714 Popular Superstitions: The howling of a dog at night (colour litho) by English School, (20th century); Private Collection; (add.info.: The howling of a dog at night. For ages it was believed that dogs possessed the power of "scenting death" even before it seized a person, but the superstition which tells us that the howling of a dog at night foretells death probably goes back to the remote days when the nocturnal howling of his half-domesticated dog warned the caveman of the approach of wild beasts or human enemies. There must have been frequent occasions when such howlings were followed by a death. EDITORS COMMENTS
This colour lithograph captures the age-old superstition surrounding the howling of a dog at night. Believed to possess the power of "scenting death," dogs have long been associated with foretelling doom, particularly when their mournful cries pierce the darkness. The origins of this superstition can be traced back to ancient times when our ancestors relied on their half-domesticated canine companions to alert them to approaching danger.
In this striking image, we are transported to a time when prehistoric man roamed the earth, living in harmony with nature and facing unknown perils in the dead of night. The haunting howls of a lone dog serve as a warning sign, signaling potential threats lurking in the shadows. As we gaze upon this scene, we are reminded of our primal instincts and deep-rooted fears surrounding mortality and the mysteries of death.
Part of a series on Popular Superstitions issued in 1930, this artwork offers a glimpse into humanity's enduring fascination with folklore and belief systems that have shaped our understanding of the world around us. Through its vivid colours and evocative imagery, it invites us to ponder the timeless connection between man and his faithful companion, forever intertwined by shared experiences and shared superstitions.
