Popular Superstitions: Thirteen at table (colour litho)

8668720 Popular Superstitions: Thirteen at table (colour litho) by English School, (20th century); Private Collection; (add.info.: Thirteen at table. Perhaps of all superstitions none has greater strength to-day than that which holds that if thirteen people sit down to table one of them will die within the year. The idea undoubtedly has its origin in the Last Supper. The number of adherents to this superstition was greatly augmented when Matthew Arnold defied it and died within the year. On the other hand, the late Lord Roberts has left it on record that in 1853 he was one of a party of thirteen who dined together at Peshawar. Eleven years later all were still alive, notwithstanding the fact that they had participated in the carnage of the Indian Mutiny. EDITORS COMMENTS
This colour lithograph titled "Popular Superstitions: Thirteen at table" by the English School from the 20th century explores the age-old superstition that sitting thirteen people at a table will bring death to one within the year. The origin of this belief is said to stem from the Last Supper, making it a widely held fear even in modern times. The image depicts a group of individuals dining together, with an air of tension and unease surrounding them as they realize they have inadvertently become part of this ominous superstition. Despite its dark connotations, there are stories of defiance against this belief, such as Matthew Arnold who challenged fate and met his demise within the year. Interestingly, Lord Roberts shared a contrasting experience where he was part of a party of thirteen during the Indian Mutiny yet all members survived unscathed. This contradiction adds layers to the complexity of superstitions and their impact on human behavior. This artwork serves as a thought-provoking reminder of how deeply ingrained beliefs can influence our actions and perceptions, shedding light on the power that folklore and traditions hold over society throughout history.
