EDITORS COMMENTS
This intriguing print captures an exact representation of a boy, approximately 12 years old, in the form of an engraving. Created by an English School artist in the 19th century, this artwork is now part of a private collection. The subject of this print holds a haunting story that dates back to the year 1742. It is believed that during the devastating plague outbreak in London in 1665, this young boy was inadvertently trapped inside a vault beneath Saint Botolphs Aldgate Old Church. Astonishingly, when the church was eventually demolished many years later, his preserved body was discovered still standing upright with his clothes on. What makes this boy's case truly extraordinary is that his skin fibers and intestines have dried up over time while very little remains of his bones. Weighing only about 18 pounds, he has become somewhat of a macabre curiosity. Currently owned by J Rogers at No 2 Maiden Lane in Wood Street, London, individuals can purchase this print for just two shillings along with a ticket to see the actual mummified boy. This image not only provides us with an accurate depiction of what this child looked like but also serves as a reminder of the harrowing impact that plagues had on communities throughout history.
