EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a stunning punch bowl painted with warehouses or Hongs in Canton (Guangzhou) during the Qing Dynasty's Qianlong Period. Measuring 15.2x36.9 cm, this porcelain masterpiece is housed at Leeds Museums and Art Galleries in Temple Newsam House, UK. The intricate design of the bowl features a large circular shape adorned with grisaille decoration highlighted by gilt accents, although most of it has worn away over time. On the outside, one can marvel at a picturesque view of the hongs - European and American workshops or warehouses - situated along the Pearl River in Canton (now known as Guangzhou). These hongs played a significant role in international trade during that era. Inside the bowl, a rim embellished with a gilt cell-patterned border leads to an exquisite depiction of the East India Company ship Pitt at its center. This vessel symbolizes historical maritime connections between China and Europe. It is worth noting that these hongs were tragically destroyed by fire in 1856. The porcelain body was crafted in Jingdezhen (formerly written Ching-te-Chen), while painting and decoration took place in Canton. This remarkable artwork not only represents Chinese craftsmanship but also serves as a testament to the rich history of global trade relationships between different nations during this period.
