Saluting the quarter-deck (colour photo)
8668592 Saluting the quarter-deck (colour photo) by English Photographer, (20th century); Private Collection; (add.info.: Saluting the quarter-deck. The admiral in our picture is saluting the quarter-deck as he is received aboard. This is the perpetuation of an ancient custom, of which the exact origin is somewhat obscure. Some consider the salute to the quarter-deck to be a survival of the demonstration of respect given to the shrine, which in medieval days was situated in the after part of a ship, frequently on the quarter-deck. By others its origin is thought to be due to the fact that the seat of command, representative of the royal prerogative, lay there. Thus a salute to the quarter-deck was a mark of respect to the King. EDITORS COMMENTS
Saluting the quarter-deck is a timeless tradition captured in this vibrant colour photo by English Photographer. The admiral, standing tall and proud, salutes the quarter-deck as he is received aboard the ship. This act of respect dates back to ancient customs, with origins that are somewhat obscure yet steeped in history.
Some believe that saluting the quarter-deck harkens back to medieval days when a shrine was located in the after part of a ship, often on the quarter-deck. Others suggest that it symbolizes reverence for the seat of command, representative of royal prerogative. In essence, a salute to the quarter-deck is a mark of respect not only for those in command but also for royalty itself.
This striking image is part of a set of 50 cigarette cards on Interesting Customs and Traditions of the Navy, Army and Airforce issued by Lambert & Butler in 1939. It serves as a reminder of our rich naval heritage and the enduring rituals that have shaped military culture throughout history.
As we gaze upon this scene frozen in time, we are reminded of the importance of honouring traditions and paying homage to those who came before us. Saluting the quarter-deck is more than just an act – it's a symbol of respect and continuity within our armed forces.
