Sea Adventure: Anson in the "Centurion" (colour litho)
8668734 Sea Adventure: Anson in the "Centurion" (colour litho) by English School, (20th century); Private Collection; (add.info.: Anson in the "Centurion." In 1740 Commodore George Anson set sail from St Helens, Isle of Wight, with a squadron of six ships and two store ships to attack the Spanish ships and settlements in the Pacific. All of his ships were almost falling to pieces, and were poorly manned with worn-out pensioners, raw recruits and gaol-birds. The Spaniards laughed, but they reckoned without the little red-faced Anson, who fought his way through every difficulty. Only three of his ships reached Juan Fernandez, and two of these were so battered that they were abandoned, leaving only the Centurion which eventually sailed right round the world and returned with immense treasure, after terrorising Spanish ships and colonies.
