Sea Adventure: The "Mimi" and the "Toutou" (colour litho)

8668775 Sea Adventure: The "Mimi" and the "Toutou" (colour litho) by English School, (20th century); Private Collection; (add.info.: The "Mimi" and the "Toutou." In June 1915, the Germans held the command of Lake Tanganyika with the armed steamers Kingani, Hedwig von Wissmann and Graf von Gotzen. The British Admiralty, however, determined to end this state of affairs, and brought two Thornycroft motor boats Mimi and Toutou, from Teddington. These makeshift men-of-war were transported hundreds of miles overland, partly by rail and partly through the jungle behind traction engines, and in the hands of intrepid men they defeated and captured the Kingani. Subsequently the Mimi assisted in the destruction of the Hedwig von Wissmann and the control of the lake became British. EDITORS COMMENTS
This lithograph captures the dramatic sea adventure of the "Mimi" and the "Toutou" on Lake Tanganyika in June 1915. At that time, German forces controlled the lake with armed steamers, posing a threat to British interests. In a daring move, the British Admiralty brought two Thornycroft motor boats overland to challenge the Germans. The journey of these makeshift men-of-war was nothing short of extraordinary - transported hundreds of miles through jungle terrain behind traction engines. With intrepid men at their helm, the Mimi and Toutou successfully defeated and captured one of the German steamers, ultimately securing control of Lake Tanganyika for Britain. This historic moment is beautifully depicted in this colour lithograph from a set of cigarette cards on Sea Adventure issued by Hignett Brothers in 1939. The detail and action captured in this artwork truly bring to life the bravery and determination displayed by those involved in this pivotal naval battle. As we gaze upon this print, we are reminded of the courage and ingenuity that shaped history during times of conflict at sea. It serves as a powerful tribute to those who risked everything for victory on Lake Tanganyika.
