Sea Adventure: The mystery of the "Mary Celeste" (colour litho)
8668774 Sea Adventure: The mystery of the "Mary Celeste" (colour litho) by English School, (20th century); Private Collection; (add.info.: The mystery of the "Mary Celeste." The most famous of all unsolved mysteries of the sea is the strange fate of the crew of the brigantine Mary Celeste (sometimes spelt Marie Celeste) on her voyage from America to Europe. After some difficulty in getting a crew, she eventually set sail with a particularly disreputable one in the autumn of 1872. She was picked up deserted in the Atlantic about two months later. It was obvious that she had been left hurriedly; a half-eaten meal was on the table and the log-book was open, yet all the boats were in place. Many solutions have been offered as to the fate of the crew and of the captain's wife and child, though none has met with general acceptance. EDITORS COMMENTS
This colour lithograph print depicts the mysterious story of the "Mary Celeste," a brigantine that became infamous for its unexplained fate. The image transports us back to the autumn of 1872, when the vessel set sail from America to Europe with a crew that was said to be particularly disreputable.
Two months later, the Mary Celeste was discovered deserted in the Atlantic Ocean. The scene on board is eerie - a half-eaten meal left on the table, an open log-book, and all boats still in place. What could have possibly led to such a sudden and inexplicable abandonment?
The unsolved mystery of what happened to the crew, including the captain's wife and child, continues to intrigue historians and maritime enthusiasts alike. Numerous theories have been proposed over the years, but none have been able to fully explain this enigmatic event.
This illustration is part of a series of cigarette cards on Sea Adventure issued by Hignett Brothers in 1939. It captures both the drama and mystique surrounding one of history's most enduring maritime puzzles - inviting viewers to ponder what secrets may lie hidden beneath these turbulent waters.
