Sea Adventure: The North-West Passage (colour litho)
8668766 Sea Adventure: The North-West Passage (colour litho) by English School, (20th century); Private Collection; (add.info.: The North-West Passage. For centuries the world's bravest explorers had tried to find a North-West Passage to the Pacific across the north of Canada. In 1906 the feat was at last accomplished after three years struggle with the ice, in the little Norwegian 47-ton herring-fisher Gjoa. Captain Roald Amundsen proved that the passage was quite useless for commercial purposes although the scientific observations he made were valuable. The little ship is now preserved on shore in San Francisco, and seems very tiny for such an adventure. Her over-all length is 69 feet, and her beam about 20 feet. EDITORS COMMENTS
This colour lithograph captures the historic sea adventure of The North-West Passage, a long sought-after route to the Pacific across the north of Canada. In 1906, Captain Roald Amundsen and his crew successfully navigated this treacherous passage in the small Norwegian herring-fisher Gjoa after three years of battling icy conditions. Despite proving that the passage was not commercially viable, Amundsen's scientific observations were invaluable.
The image depicts the tiny 47-ton ship preserved on shore in San Francisco, highlighting its modest size compared to the monumental journey it undertook. Measuring just 69 feet in length and with a beam of about 20 feet, Gjoa symbolizes courage and determination in the face of adversity.
Issued as part of a set of cigarette cards on Sea Adventure by Hignett Brothers in 1939, this artwork showcases the bravery and resilience of explorers who dared to venture into uncharted waters. It serves as a reminder of humanity's enduring quest for discovery and knowledge, encapsulating an important chapter in maritime history that continues to inspire awe and admiration today.
