The ship's bell (colour photo)
8668586 The ship's bell (colour photo) by English Photographer, (20th century); Private Collection; (add.info.: The ship's bell. In the British Navy it has been the custom for several centuries to denote the hour by the striking of a bell. Until 1857 the time was reckoned by a "half hour sand glass" and, as the latter was turned, the bell was struck. Although ships are now equipped with the most modern time-keeping devices, ship's bells are still used, being struck once at the end of the first half hour of a watch, twice at the second half hour, and so on, up to eight bells at the end of the fourth hour. Duty in a ship is divided into watches of four hours duration, with the exception of the two dog watches of two hours each between 4 and 8 pm. We show the Ship's Bell on board HMS Hood. EDITORS COMMENTS
This colour print captures the timeless tradition of the ship's bell in the British Navy. The striking image showcases the intricate details of the bell on board HMS Hood, a symbol of maritime history and discipline.
For centuries, sailors have relied on the ringing of bells to denote time at sea. Before modern time-keeping devices were introduced, ships used a "half hour sand glass" to mark each passing hour with a resounding chime. Even today, despite technological advancements, ship's bells continue to play a vital role in maintaining order and routine on board.
The photograph beautifully highlights the significance of these bells in naval customs and traditions. Each strike represents a half hour interval during watch duty, ensuring that sailors remain vigilant and organized throughout their shifts at sea.
As we gaze upon this stunning image, we are reminded of the rich heritage and symbolism associated with maritime life. The Ship's Bell serves as a poignant reminder of the dedication and commitment required to navigate through treacherous waters while upholding centuries-old traditions passed down from generation to generation.
