EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a group of surgeons and physicians in Kabul, Afghanistan in 1879. Taken by photographer John Burke during the Second Afghan War, this image offers a glimpse into the medical profession during that time period. The doctors are seen standing together, their serious expressions reflecting the gravity of their work. Intriguingly, Burke was part of Major-General Frederick Roberts' Kabul Field Force when he took this photograph. Having entered the city in October 1879, he documented not only the soldiers but also various aspects of life in Kabul. His lens captured its diverse inhabitants and their daily lives until his departure with the Field Force in May 1880. The collection from which this photo originates was compiled by Surgeon Henry Walter Bellew, adding to its historical significance. This image serves as a testament to both the advancements made in medicine during that era and the dedication of these healthcare professionals who served on foreign soil. As we observe this portrait today, it is a reminder of how far we have come in terms of medical knowledge and practice. It also prompts us to appreciate those who paved the way for modern healthcare systems through their tireless efforts and commitment to saving lives.
