EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a set of toy building bricks from the late 19th century, beautifully preserved at The Geffrye Museum of the Home in London. These wooden blocks, covered with transfer printed paper, were not just ordinary playthings but held educational and religious significance. The set is housed in its original wooden box adorned with a stunning representation of a cathedral's exterior. The intricate details include stonework, stained-glass windows, and apses that transport us to another era. The box itself forms the base of the cathedral while the blocks make up its roof. Within this extraordinary set are sixteen blocks that construct both the roof and tower of the cathedral. Alongside them lie essential items such as a Holy Bible and Prayer Book, each consisting of two pieces with front and back covers containing text inside. A smaller brown wooden Bible featuring a red cross on its front adds further depth to this collection. Moreover, didactic wooden blocks embellished with alphabets, Biblical passages, and illustrations from Noah's Ark story complete this remarkable ensemble. Standing at 12cm tall with dimensions measuring 25cm wide by 19.5cm deep for the box alone; these toy building bricks offer an enchanting glimpse into history while simultaneously nurturing young minds through play-based learning experiences.
