5921626 General Sir Henry Thomas Godwin, 1852 circa (b/w photo) by McCosh, John (1805-85); National Army Museum, London; (add.info.: General Sir Henry Thomas Godwin, 1852 circa.
Photograph by Surgeon John McCosh (1805-1885), Bengal Army, 1852 circa.
A veteran of the 1st Burma War (1824-1826), General Sir Henry Godwin (1784-1853) was the commander-in-chief of the British forces during the 2nd Burma War (1852-1853). During this campaign Prome (Pyay) and Rangoon (Yangon) were rapidly overrun and the province of Pegu (Bago) was annexed by the British. However final victory proved elusive, and fighting and civil unrest continued for several years. The climate and physical exertion took a heavy toll on Godwins health and he died shortly after the campaign.

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the distinguished figure of General Sir Henry Thomas Godwin, circa 1852. The image was taken by Surgeon John McCosh, a member of the Bengal Army during that time period. General Sir Henry Godwin, born in 1784, had an impressive military career. He served as a veteran in the 1st Burma War from 1824 to 1826 and later became the commander-in-chief of the British forces during the 2nd Burma War from 1852 to 1853. Under his leadership, British forces swiftly conquered Prome (Pyay) and Rangoon (Yangon), annexing the province of Pegu (Bago). However, despite these victories, ultimate success proved elusive as fighting and civil unrest persisted for years. The toll of harsh climate conditions and physical exertion weighed heavily on General Godwin's health. Tragically, he passed away shortly after this campaign concluded. This photograph is part of an album containing a collection of 310 images captured between 1848 and 1853. Preserved at London's National Army Museum, it serves as a testament to General Sir Henry Thomas Godwin's significant role in British military history. Through this portrait-like composition, we are transported back in time to witness the resolute gaze and dignified presence of one who dedicated his life to serving his country with honor and courage.
