EDITORS COMMENTS
This aquatint print, titled "A Chief of the Tribe of 'Jekranee Beloochees'", offers a glimpse into the tumultuous era of the 1st Afghan War. Created in 1839 by William Henry de Daubrawa, this print showcases the skilled craftsmanship and attention to detail that was characteristic of aquatint prints during this period. The image depicts a Baluchi chieftain leading his mounted fighters along a treacherous mountain path. Dressed in traditional attire, he wears a turban and striped pantaloons, exuding an air of authority and strength. Armed with a sword, musket, and shield, he is prepared for battle against any adversaries who may cross their path. This artwork provides insight into the challenges faced by the Army of the Indus as they made their way through Afghanistan via the Bolan Pass.
