EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a leaf from a Lectionary with St. Luke, created between 1057 and 1063 in Byzantine style. The intricate artwork is composed of ink, tempera, and gold on vellum, creating a stunning visual display. Housed at the Cleveland Museum of Art in Ohio, USA, this piece holds historical significance. The lectionary was gifted to the Holy Trinity Monastery at Chalke in Constantinople by Empress Katherine Komnene in 1063. This book contained gospel readings used during church services. In the image, various tools utilized by scribes are meticulously arranged before the evangelists: a stylus for writing and engraving, dividers for precise measurements, pens for delicate strokes, a knife for cutting purposes, burnishers for polishing details, and inkpots to bring life to their creations. Notably present within gospel books worldwide are portraits of Matthew, Mark, Luke (depicted here), and John – authors of the Gospels themselves. These portraits served as authentication symbols since these individuals were believed to be eyewitnesses to the texts they wrote. Through this photograph's expert composition and lighting techniques captured by Bridgeman Images' Fine Art Finder collection; viewers can appreciate both the artistic mastery behind this ancient manuscript fragment as well as its cultural significance within Christian history.
