Self Portrait with Two Square Brushes, c. 1880 (oil on canvas)
2956894 Self Portrait with Two Square Brushes, c.1880 (oil on canvas) by Gotch, Thomas Cooper (1854-1931); 58.42x44.45 cm; Private Collection; (add.info.: Painting himself holding square brushes, known as brights or flats brush, is here something of a statement by the artist. Those who used them leave the brushmarks and do not smooth away the evidence of method (Scottish Arts Review, 1889). The particular practitioner of the technique was the French rural naturalist painter Jules Bastien Lepage whose work was the sensation of the Grosvenor Gallery in 1880, creating amongst young British painters what Stanhope Forbes called the unflinching realism of the cult of Bastien Lepage. Later, Gotch became a founder member of the New English Art Club, set up in 1887 to represent and provide a venue for English painters influenced by French painters, Gotch associated himself with those artists based at Newlyn in Cornwall painting by the example of Bastien, rather than the Impressionist influenced Chelsea painters such as Whistler, whose technique was looser.); Photo eThe Ms Gallery, London; English, out of copyright

EDITORS COMMENTS
The self-portrait captured in this photo print, titled "Self Portrait with Two Square Brushes" is a testament to the artist's bold statement and dedication to his craft. Painted by Thomas Cooper Gotch around 1880, this oil on canvas artwork measures approximately 58.42x44.45 cm and is held in a private collection. In this piece, Gotch portrays himself holding two square brushes, also known as brights or flats brushes. This choice of subject matter holds significant meaning as it aligns him with a particular technique favored by French rural naturalist painter Jules Bastien Lepage. The use of these brushes allows for visible brushstrokes and preserves the evidence of method rather than smoothing them away. During that time, Bastien Lepage's work caused quite a sensation at the Grosvenor Gallery in 1880, influencing young British painters to adopt his unflinching realism style. Gotch was one such artist who embraced this approach and later became a founding member of the New English Art Club in 1887. Unlike other contemporary painters influenced by Impressionism, such as Whistler, whose techniques were looser, Gotch associated himself with artists based in Newlyn Cornwall who painted following Bastien Lepage's example. This print provides us with an intimate glimpse into the artistic choices made by Thomas Cooper Gotch during his career and showcases his commitment to representing reality through deliberate brushwork rather than conforming to popular trends of the time.
