Chest-on-Chest, c. 1800 (mahogany)
499886 Chest-on-Chest, c.1800 (mahogany)
by American School, (19th century); 235x108.6x62.3 cm; Cleveland Museum of Art, OH, USA; (add.info.: Block-fronted case furniture-that is, pieces with faAzades that vary in the plane of their relief by extending forward at the sides and receding in the center-decorated with carved shell ornaments, has long been among the most admired of 18th-century American furniture. The sophisticated examples of such pieces were presumed to have been made in Newport, Rhode Island, particularly by members of the Townsend and Goddard families. However, recent scholarship convincingly hypothesizes that some of the finest pieces of this type of furniture were, in fact, made in Providence, Rhode Island-many of them, such as this chest, for members of the Brown family, inhabitants of that city. This piece was probably made for either Nicholas Brown (1729-1791) or, more likely, his son Nicholas Brown Jr. (1769-1841). The museums chest-on-chest can be related stylistically and technically to other Providence pieces, but it is not yet clear who made them. Members of two cabinetmaking families, the Carliles and the Rawsons, are among the most likely candidates.

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a magnificent piece of American furniture from the 19th century, known as "Chest-on-Chest, c. 1800". Crafted with exquisite mahogany wood, this block-fronted case furniture is adorned with intricately carved shell ornaments that add an air of sophistication to its design. For many years, such pieces were believed to have originated in Newport, Rhode Island and were attributed to the Townsend and Goddard families. However, recent research suggests that some of the finest examples of this type of furniture were actually made in Providence, Rhode Island. It is now hypothesized that members of the Brown family commissioned these exceptional pieces for their homes in Providence. The exact maker of this chest-on-chest remains unknown; however, it can be stylistically and technically linked to other Providence pieces. The Carliles and Rawsons are among the most probable candidates from two prominent cabinetmaking families at the time. Measuring approximately 235x108.6x62.3 cm, this remarkable work currently resides at the Cleveland Museum of Art in Ohio, USA. Its acquisition was made possible through a generous gift by Moselle Taylor Meals. Through this photograph captured by Bridgeman Images for Fine Art Finder, we can appreciate not only the beauty but also the historical significance behind this stunning piece of American craftsmanship from centuries past.
