Compass moulding plane (hornbeam)
701089 Compass moulding plane (hornbeam) by German School, (17th century); 17.5x5.2 cm; David Russell Collection; (add.info.: Profilhabel; The Cupid Plane
The Cupid s-bow profile of the cutter is echoed in the decoration of the planes escapement, wedge and mortise and wittily carries through into the low-relief carving of a Cupid against a punched ground on the side of the stock.
Planes of this type are often thought to be apprentice pieces and examples with wooden dummy irons are known. The present plane, however, does have a real iron and there are clear signs on the sole that the plane has been used. The way the top of the wedge and the iron have been cut back for clearance in a confined space provides further evidence.

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a Compass moulding plane from the 17th century, crafted by the German School. Measuring at 17.5x5.2 cm, this hornbeam plane is part of the esteemed David Russell Collection. Known as "The Cupid Plane" or "Profilhabel" its unique design features a charming Cupid s-bow profile on the cutter, which is beautifully echoed in the decorative elements of the escapement, wedge, and mortise. What sets this particular piece apart is its intricate low-relief carving depicting a Cupid against a punched ground on one side of the stock. This cleverly combines functionality with artistry, showcasing skilled craftsmanship and attention to detail. While similar planes are often considered apprentice pieces and feature wooden dummy irons, this exceptional specimen boasts a real iron and bears clear signs of use on its sole. The top of the wedge and iron have been expertly cut back to allow for clearance in tight spaces—a testament to both practicality and ingenuity. With its 50-degree pitch angle, this ornate compass moulding plane represents not only an essential tool for woodworking but also an exquisite example of baroque-era decoration infused with mythological symbolism. It serves as a reminder that even functional implements can be transformed into works of art through skillful craftsmanship and imaginative design.
