Illustration from the Breviary of Alaric, 506 (vellum)
1066017 Illustration from the Breviary of Alaric, 506 (vellum) by German School, (11th century); Private Collection; (add.info.: The Breviary of Alaric (Breviarium Alaricianum or Lex Romana Visigothorum) is a collection of Roman law, compiled by order of Alaric II, King of the Visigoths, with the advice of his bishops and nobles. It was promulgated on 2 February 506, the 22nd year of his reign. It applied, not to the Visigothic nobles under their own law, which had been formulated by Euric, but to the Hispano-Roman and Gallo-Roman population, living under Visigoth rule south of the Loire and, in Book 16, to the members of the Trinitarian Catholic Church. (The Visigoths were Arian and maintained their own clergy. )

EDITORS COMMENTS
This illustration from the Breviary of Alaric, dating back to the 11th century, offers a glimpse into the rich history and legal traditions of the Visigoths. The German School artist skillfully depicts a scene that showcases both decorative beauty and historical significance. In this stylized image, we see figures adorned in ornate attire, representing different tribes under Visigothic rule. The male figure at the center is none other than Alaric II himself, King of the Visigoths. Surrounding him are his trusted bishops and nobles who assisted in compiling this compendium of Roman law. The intricate border framing this artwork adds an extra layer of artistic flair to its overall composition. Its naive yet mesmerizing design perfectly complements the subject matter at hand. The Breviary of Alaric was promulgated on February 2nd, 506 AD, during Alaric's twenty-second year as king. This collection applied not only to Hispano-Roman and Gallo-Roman populations but also extended its reach to members of the Trinitarian Catholic Church. As we admire this remarkable print from a private collection today, let us appreciate how it serves as a testament to centuries-old legal systems and cultural exchange between various European tribes during medieval times.
