EDITORS COMMENTS
This coloured engraving titled "The blackcap Flycatcher, 1749-73" showcases the exquisite artistry of Mark Catesby and Michael Seligmann. The print, part of a private collection, beautifully captures the essence of this unique bird species. Originally engraved by George Edwards in his renowned works on uncommon birds, Seligmann took it upon himself to re-engrave the plates and combine them with Catesby's work on Carolina, Florida, and the Bahama Islands. This collaboration resulted in a stunning fusion that not only translated names into German but also added additional figures and plants to enhance the original illustrations. The image portrays a Schwarzer Fliegenstecher (blackcap flycatcher) perched delicately on a branch amidst its natural habitat. With meticulous attention to detail, every feather is intricately depicted, showcasing both the beauty and scientific accuracy that characterizes this piece. As an illustration from a bygone era of natural history exploration, this print serves as a testament to humanity's enduring fascination with nature's wonders. It invites viewers to appreciate not only the aesthetic appeal but also gain insight into these remarkable creatures' behavior and characteristics. Whether you are an avid bird enthusiast or simply appreciate fine artistry, this enchanting engraving offers a glimpse into our rich natural heritage while celebrating centuries-old artistic techniques.
