EDITORS COMMENTS
This coloured engraving, titled "The Greater Cockroach, and the Whistle Insect" transports us back to the 18th century when natural history illustrations were in their prime. Created by George Edwards and re-engraved by Michael Seligmann, this print is a fusion of two renowned works: A Natural History of Uncommon Birds and Gleanings of Natural History. The intricate details showcased in this artwork are truly mesmerizing. The larger-than-life portrayal of the cockroach captures our attention immediately, with its imposing presence and delicate wings spread wide. Beside it stands the whimsical whistle insect, its slender body seemingly ready to produce enchanting melodies. As we delve deeper into this composition, we discover that Seligmann's contribution includes translating names into German while adding unique figures and plants absent from the original works. This amalgamation creates a harmonious blend between nature's wonders as observed by Edwards and Catesby's exploration of Carolina, Florida, and the Bahama Islands. Displayed against a neutral background, these creatures take center stage in all their glory. Their vibrant colors pop against the white canvas, allowing us to appreciate every minute detail meticulously captured through engraving techniques. "The Greater Cockroach and Whistle Insect" serves as a testament to humanity's fascination with nature throughout history. It reminds us that even insects can be subjects worthy of admiration when portrayed with skillful artistry.
