The Reveille on the Line of Battle, 1876
EDITORS COMMENTS
is a captivating etching by Edwin Austin Forbes that offers a glimpse into the life of soldiers during the American Civil War. The print, part of the Gilder Lehrman Collection in New York, showcases two distinct scenes. The top half depicts a powerful moment at dawn as troops awaken to the sound of reveille. Wrapped in their blankets and lying on the ground, soldiers stir from their slumber as a bugler stands atop a hill playing his instrument. The image captures both the serenity and anticipation that comes with starting another day on the battlefield. In contrast, the bottom half presents a moonlit scene where soldiers are signaled to retire to their tents through "Tattoo" played by regimental drum corps. This peaceful moment signifies an end to another day filled with hardships and battles. Forbes' attention to detail brings these moments alive, showcasing not only his artistic skill but also his personal experience traveling with Union Army from 1862-1865. As one of many works created by Forbes during this period, "The Reveille on the Line of Battle" serves as a poignant reminder of sacrifice and camaraderie among those who fought for their beliefs. This historical print allows us to reflect upon our nation's past while honoring those who served bravely during one of its most tumultuous times.
