EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases Joseph II, the Holy Roman Emperor and King of Bohemia and Hungary, alongside his brothers and sisters. The Austrian School's exquisite wax sculpture from the 18th century beautifully captures the essence of this royal family. In this remarkable composition, we see a total of eleven miniatures depicting the children of Maria Theresa and Francis of Lorraine. From left to right, we are introduced to Archduchess Maria Anna, followed by Joseph II himself - an influential figure who reigned as Holy Roman emperor from 1765 until his death in 1790. The image continues with Archduchess Maria Christina, Princess of Saxony and Duchess of Teschen; Archduchess Maria Elisabeth; Archduke Charles; Archduke Leopold II - who served as Grand Duke of Tuscany from 1765 to 1790 before becoming Holy Roman Emperor in 1790; Archduchess Carolina, Queen consort of Naples and Sicily for nearly five decades; Archduke Ferdinand; Archduchess Maria Antonia (better known as Marie-Antoinette), who became Queen consort of France in 1774 until her tragic end during the French Revolution in 1793. Lastly, we have Archduke Maximilian - Archbishop Elector of Cologne from 1784 until his death in 1801. This exceptional piece was gifted by Empress Maria Theresa to M. de Montazet, the French Ambassador at that time. With its intricate details and historical significance, this print offers us a glimpse into the lives and lineage of one Europe's most powerful families during a transformative era.
