EDITORS COMMENTS
The caption for the print of "Heavy Day in the Batteries, 1857" could be as follows: "This coloured lithograph titled 'A Heavy Day in the Batteries' depicts a pivotal moment during the Indian Mutiny of 1857-1859. Created by George Francklin Atkinson and published by William Simpson, E Walker, and others, this artwork captures the intensity of siege warfare. In preparation for their assault on Delhi, British forces established gun batteries within close range of the city walls. The weeks leading up to September 1857 saw a long artillery duel between rebel guns and British cannons depicted here. Eventually, through relentless bombardment, they managed to silence the enemy's firepower. As shown in this engraving from 'The Campaign in India 1857-58, ' after neutralizing rebel defenses with their heavy artillery fire, British troops breached bastions and walls to pave way for an attack on Delhi. The capture of this strategic city was crucial in suppressing the Indian Mutiny. This image provides a glimpse into one of history's most significant conflicts. It showcases not only military tactics but also highlights the resilience and determination exhibited by both sides during this tumultuous period. "
