EDITORS COMMENTS
This coloured lithograph, titled "Horse Artillery in Action, 1857 circa" transports us back to a significant moment in history. Created by George Francklin Atkinson and published by Day and Son in 1857-1858, this print is part of the renowned series "The Campaign in India 1857-58". The artwork vividly depicts horse artillery units providing crucial fire support to the cavalry during a battle. With soldiers mounted on horses, wagons, or limbers, these agile teams were able to keep pace with the fast-moving mounted units. The scene captures the intensity and chaos of warfare as smoke billows from cannons while officers command their troops amidst the turmoil. This lithograph holds particular historical significance as it portrays an eventful period known as "the Great Mutiny" or "Indian Rebellion of 1857". During this time, tensions between Indian soldiers serving under British rule and their British officers reached a boiling point. The rebellion was marked by widespread violence and resistance against colonial authority. Notably, both the East India Company's Bengal and Bombay Armies established their own horse artillery units modeled after Britain's Royal Horse Artillery. This lithograph serves as a testament to the bravery and skill of these dedicated soldiers who played a vital role during this tumultuous era. Preserved at London's National Army Museum, this remarkable piece offers viewers an opportunity to reflect upon an important chapter in history through artistry that brings it to life once more.
