7342253 Trafalgar under the Upper Barracca, Malta, 27 March 1852, 1852 (pen, ink, wash, watercolour) by Mends, George Pechell (1815-71); 25.5x37.2 cm; National Maritime Museum, London, UK; (add.info.: Creator: Captain George Pechell Mends
Inscribed top left, Trafalgar- Malta- / March 27th 52, this is a detailed hull study of the ship's hull from ahead just off the starboard bow, as she lies at anchor (chain cable) under the Upper Barracca, Valletta, which is lightly sketched in in pencil behind. The gunports are open with the guns run out, and a boat boom is rigged from the starboard side with a boat under it and a dghaisa alongside further aft; another boat hangs outboard on davits. Apart from figures in the two boats on the water there is no other staffage and though the lower masts are indicated there has been no attempt to add yards or rigging. The ship's reflection in the water is well achieved and its figurehead - a bust of Nelson in uniform, including the sash of the Order of the Bath, and a hat - is almost self-identifying in terms of detailing.); © National Maritime Museum, Greenwich, London

EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning print captures the majestic Trafalgar under the Upper Barracca in Malta on March 27, 1852. Painted by Captain George Pechell Mends, this detailed hull study showcases the ship's hull from ahead just off the starboard bow as she lies at anchor. The gunports are open with guns run out, and a boat boom is rigged from the starboard side with boats alongside and hanging outboard on davits.
The reflection of the ship in the water is beautifully depicted, along with its intricate figurehead - a bust of Nelson in uniform complete with the sash of the Order of the Bath and a hat. The scene is brought to life with figures in boats on the water but lacks any other staffage or rigging details.
The historical significance of this piece is evident as it provides a glimpse into maritime life during that era. The artist's attention to detail and skillful execution truly brings Trafalgar to life in this artwork. This print serves as a timeless reminder of naval history and pays homage to one of Britain's most iconic ships.
