Zenith sector telescope, 1727 (iron, tin)

7340751 Zenith sector telescope, 1727 (iron, tin) by Unknown photographer, (20th century); 381x7.2 cm; National Maritime Museum, London, UK; (add.info.: Creator: George Graham
This zenith sector telescope was constructed by George Graham in 1727 for Bradley's personal use in studying the parallax of the star Gamma Draconis following work he had begun on the detection of parallax at Kew with Samuel Molyneux. When he was appointed third Astronomer Royal in 1742, Bradley only agreed to bring this instrument to Greenwich after the Government paid him the princely sum of £45 for it. With it he discovered two major phenomena: the aberration of light and the nutation (wobbling) of the Earth's axis. It was used at Greenwich until 1837. It was then used at the Observatory at the Cape of Good Hope between 1837 and 1839.); © National Maritime Museum, Greenwich, London

EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning print captures the intricate details of the Zenith sector telescope, crafted in 1727 by the skilled hands of George Graham. Measuring at an impressive 381x7.2 cm, this iron and tin marvel was originally created for Bradley's personal use in studying the parallax of the star Gamma Draconis. George Graham's creation played a crucial role in astronomical discoveries, as it aided Bradley in detecting both the aberration of light and the nutation (wobbling) of Earth's axis. The instrument remained in use at Greenwich until 1837 before being transferred to the Observatory at the Cape of Good Hope from 1837 to 1839. The historical significance and scientific contributions made by this zenith sector telescope are truly remarkable. Its legacy lives on through its impact on our understanding of celestial phenomena and its representation as a symbol of innovation and exploration. Displayed at the National Maritime Museum in London, UK, this photograph beautifully showcases not only the physical attributes but also the rich history behind this extraordinary piece of astronomical equipment. A true testament to human ingenuity and curiosity about our place in the universe, this Zenith sector telescope continues to inspire awe and wonder centuries after its creation.
