EDITORS COMMENTS
This poignant print captures a pocket watch case containing a photograph of Private William Henry Ellen, a young soldier from the 1st Battalion, The Auckland Regiment in 1916. At just 18 years old, Ellen left London for Wellington, New Zealand to pursue farming before ultimately joining the New Zealand Expeditionary Force.
Tragically, only four years later, Private Ellen lost his life while serving on the Somme during World War I. His bravery and sacrifice are commemorated on the memorial to the missing at Caterpillar Valley in France.
The image of this pocket watch case serves as a powerful reminder of the personal stories behind each soldier who fought in the Great War. It is a tangible connection to a young man who left his home far behind to serve his country and never returned.
As we reflect on this piece of history, let us honor not only Private William Henry Ellen but all those who have made the ultimate sacrifice in service to their nation. May their memory live on through artifacts like this one that preserve their legacy for future generations to remember and appreciate.
