The Hero of Lucknow (stipple engraving, coloured)

5920037 The Hero of Lucknow (stipple engraving, coloured) by Ritchie, Alexander Hay (1822-1895); National Army Museum, London; (add.info.: The Hero of Lucknow.
Stipple engraving by A H Ritchie, published by Albion, 1859.
During the Indian Mutiny (1857-1859), General Sir Henry Havelock led the British force that reached Cawnpore on 17 July 1857 after advancing up the Grand Trunk Road from Allahabad. His 2, 000 troops had marched 200 kilometres at the hottest time of the year, won four pitched battles, including the affairs at Fatehpur and Aherwa on 12 and 16 July, and captured 25 guns.
Havelock later left Cawnpore and headed northwards across Oudh, defeating several rebel armies and fighting his way into the Lucknow Residency compound on 26 September 1857. Major-General Sir James Outram, who by rights should have assumed command, accompanied him. Instead, Outram agreed to serve under HavelockAs command. Their force was only sufficient to reinforce the garrison and the siege continued until Sir Colin CampbellAs arrival in November. Havelock died of dysentery on 29 November 1857, a few days after the siege was lifted.); eNational Army Museum; American, out of copyright

The Hero of Lucknow

EDITORS COMMENTS
is a stunning stipple engraving that captures the bravery and resilience of General Sir Henry Havelock during the Indian Mutiny. Created by Alexander Hay Ritchie in 1859, this coloured print showcases the remarkable journey and triumphs of Havelock's British force. The image depicts Havelock leading his troops through treacherous terrain, having marched an impressive 200 kilometers in scorching heat to reach Cawnpore. Along their way, they won four pitched battles, including Fatehpur and Aherwa, capturing 25 guns along the route. Havelock's determination did not waver as he continued northwards across Oudh, facing rebel armies and eventually entering the Lucknow Residency compound on September 26th, 1857. Major-General Sir James Outram accompanied him but agreed to serve under Havelock's command instead of assuming leadership himself. Despite their limited forces, Havelock and Outram reinforced the garrison at Lucknow while enduring a prolonged siege until Sir Colin Campbell arrived in November. Tragically, just days after lifting the siege, Havelock succumbed to dysentery on November 29th. This powerful engraving pays tribute to General Sir Henry Havelock's unwavering courage and strategic brilliance during one of India's most challenging periods. It serves as a reminder of his heroic efforts in leading his men against all odds for the sake of victory and honor.
