The Destruction of the Moabites at Ein Gedi, Viewed by Jehoshaphat
EDITORS COMMENTS
. This print captures a pivotal moment in biblical history, as depicted in Gustave Dore's renowned illustration from the Dore Bible of 1866. The scene unfolds with King Jehoshaphat of Judah standing amidst the aftermath of a great and powerful battle. The Moabites, having formed an alliance with neighboring nations, had marched against Jehoshaphat's kingdom. Their encampment at Ein Gedi became the backdrop for their ultimate downfall. However, fate intervened as discord spread among the allied forces, leading to a tragic quarrel that resulted in their mutual destruction. Jehoshaphat stands witness to this divine intervention, his expression reflecting both awe and gratitude. Surrounded by fallen warriors and strewn spoils of war, he contemplates the magnitude of God's power and protection bestowed upon his people. Gustave Dore masterfully brings this ancient tale to life through intricate wood engravings that captivate viewers even today. His attention to detail allows us to immerse ourselves in this historical event while contemplating themes such as faith, divine intervention, and triumph over adversity. As we gaze upon this remarkable image captured by Bridgeman Images' Fine Art Finder collection, we are reminded not only of our shared human history but also how art can transcend time and connect us with stories that have shaped civilizations throughout centuries.
