Study of a donkey, c.1820 (pen and ink, wash, watercolour)
7342270 Study of a donkey, c.1820 (pen and ink, wash, watercolour) by Streatfeild, Thomas (1777-1848); 4.5x5.1 cm; National Maritime Museum, London, UK; (add.info.: Creator: Reverend Thomas Streatfeild (1777-1848)
The present album of pencil drawings and watercolours represents a departure from the sobriety of Streatfeild's activities as a curate and antiquarian. It begins with a few pencil studies: a bridge, trees and animals, but is largely made up of a group of scenes aboard ship, presumably taken from life. The collected vignettes and caricatures offer a humorous glimpse of life on board ship, as passengers find their sea-legs and the crew carry out their duties. Curiously, none of the drawings include any suggestion of a port or coastline, or any other indication of where the ship was sailing from or to. However, it seems likely that the images record the voyage of a packet boat crossing the English Channel or North Sea.); © National Maritime Museum, Greenwich, London

EDITORS COMMENTS
This charming and detailed study of a donkey, created by Reverend Thomas Streatfeild in 1820, showcases his talent as an artist beyond his usual role as a curate and antiquarian. The delicate pen and ink lines combined with the subtle washes of watercolor bring this humble creature to life on paper.
Streatfeild's collection of drawings and watercolors in this album offer a unique glimpse into life aboard ship during the early 19th century. From scenes of passengers finding their sea-legs to caricatures of the crew carrying out their duties, each vignette captures the humor and daily activities onboard without any indication of a specific location or destination.
The absence of any coastal landscapes or port views suggests that these images may document a voyage across the English Channel or North Sea on a packet boat. Despite the lack of geographical context, Streatfeild's attention to detail and ability to capture everyday moments make this collection both entertaining and historically significant.
This particular study of a donkey serves as a reminder that even in unexpected places like aboard ship, there is beauty and charm waiting to be discovered through artistry and observation.
