EDITORS COMMENTS
**The Devastating Arrival of the Black Death in Bergen** This haunting engraving captures a pivotal moment in history - the arrival of the Black Death in Bergen, Norway, AD 1348. The scene is adapted from a poem by J G Hollway and originally appeared in "Black and White: A Weekly Illustrated Record and Review" on May 9th, 1891. As depicted here, disease-ridden ships have docked at the city's harbor, bringing with them the deadly plague that would go on to ravage Europe. The engraving shows a boatload of afflicted bodies being carried ashore by men in hazmat-like attire - an eerie foreshadowing of modern-day pandemic protocols. The Black Death, caused by bubonic plague bacteria transmitted through fleas and rodents, went on to claim millions of lives across the continent over the next few years. This engraving serves as a poignant reminder of one of history's most devastating pandemics, which left an indelible mark on European society for centuries to come. (Courtesy Bridgeman Images)
