7215400 GOPAK. DANCE OF THE ZAPOROGUES COSSACKS, 1926-1930 (oil on linoleum) by Repin, Ilya Efimovich (1844-1930); Private Collection; (add.info.: 1926-1930//Oil on linoleum
Repine undertook this final painting at the age of eighty-two, under very difficult conditions. Unable to buy canvas anymore, he painted it, like Golgotha, on a poor material: linoleum. As early as 1926, he was thinking of creating a monumental composition inspired by the Cossack dances and songs of his youth. The " gopak" is a disheveled dance that the artist renders here by a burst of colors and a very free technique. The laughter of the characters, their vital energy surprise under the brush of the octogenarian painter. Produced in memory of the composer Modest Mussorgsky, the work was offered by Repin to his daughter Vera.); Photo © Sylvain Collet

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases Ilya Efimovich Repin's masterpiece, "GOPAK. DANCE OF THE ZAPOROGUES COSSACKS". Painted between 1926 and 1930 on linoleum due to the artist's inability to afford canvas, this final work by Repin is a testament to his unwavering passion for art even in challenging circumstances. Inspired by the Cossack dances and songs of his youth, Repin brings the disheveled dance known as "gopak" to life through vibrant colors and a free technique. Despite being eighty-two years old at the time of its creation, the artist's brush captures the laughter and vital energy of the characters with remarkable skill. Repin dedicated this painting to Modest Mussorgsky, a renowned composer, and gifted it to his daughter Vera as a token of remembrance. The composition exudes happiness, joy, and gaiety, reflecting not only Repin's artistic prowess but also his ability to evoke emotions through his work. The photograph itself beautifully captures every detail of this early twentieth-century masterpiece. From the intricate choreography of dancers to musicians playing woodwind instruments with great enthusiasm, each element contributes to an overall sense of movement and action. Bridgeman Images has expertly preserved this significant artwork from Fine Art Finder in their collection. It serves as a reminder that true artistry knows no bounds – not even limited resources can hinder an artist's creativity when fueled by passion and dedication.
