VERA CHEVTSOVA, 1869 (oil on canvas)
7215207 VERA CHEVTSOVA, 1869 (oil on canvas) by Repin, Ilya Efimovich (1844-1930); State Russian Museum, St. Petersburg, Russia; (add.info.: 1869//Oil on canvas
This is Repins first portrait of his future wife, Vera Shevtsova, here aged fourteen. Expressive and lively, it reveals the freedom that will be that of the painter in the genre of portraiture. The quick stroke, the wide brushstrokes delimiting frank colors, the dynamic agreement between red and green, the blunt pose of the model make it a singular work in his early works. Vera marries Repine three years later. The couple had four children, before separating definitively in the late 1890s.); Photo © Sylvain Collet

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases Ilya Efimovich Repin's first portrait of his future wife, Vera Chevtsova, painted in 1869. At the tender age of fourteen, Vera exudes a sense of freedom and liveliness that would become characteristic of Repin's portraiture style. The artist's quick brushstrokes and bold use of color create an expressive composition that is truly unique among his early works. In this painting, we see Vera seated with a confident gaze directly into the viewer's eyes. Her pose is assertive yet relaxed, emphasizing her youthful energy and charm. The dynamic interplay between vibrant reds and greens adds depth to the piece, further enhancing its visual impact. Repin went on to marry Vera three years after completing this portrait, and together they raised four children before eventually parting ways in the late 1890s. This image captures a moment frozen in time - a glimpse into their early relationship filled with hope and promise. Photographed by Sylvain Collet for Bridgeman Images, this print allows us to appreciate the beauty and significance of Repin's masterpiece from afar. It serves as a testament to the enduring power of art to capture not only physical appearances but also emotions and relationships that transcend time itself.
