EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the exquisite Button, 11th Regiment of Bengal Cavalry (Lancers), dating back to the years 1864-1876. Crafted by Firmin and Sons in London, this medium gilt button is adorned with a striking unit monogram, A BLA, set against crossed lances and topped with the majestic Imperial Crown. Originally formed during the Indian Mutiny in Lahore by Captain Frederick Wale, this regiment underwent various transformations under different commanders. After Wale's demise in 1858, Major Dighton Probyn assumed leadership and renamed it as the 1st Regiment of Sikh Irregular Cavalry. Initially governed by the Government of Punjab, its authority was later transferred to the Commander-in-Chief of India in 1860. The unit played a significant role during China's second war from 1857-1860 before returning to India as the re-designated 11th Bengal Cavalry in 1861. In an effort to reflect their prowess on horseback, they added "Lancers" into their name in 1864. Following its merger with the 12th Cavalry in1921, this esteemed regiment transformed into the renowned entity known as "5th King Edward's Own Probyn's Horse". Remarkably surviving through India's partition as "5th Horse" it continued serving as an armored regiment within Pakistan Army. Captured beautifully within this print from Fine Art Finder and sourced from National Army Museum London’s Field Marshal Sir John Chapple Indian Army Collection; it offers us a glimpse into history while honoring these brave cavalrymen who left an indelible mark on military heritage.
