EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the prestigious Seringapatam Medal, a symbol of valor and triumph. Crafted in 1799 by Conrad Heinrich Kuchler, this magnificent medal was commissioned by the East India Company to honor both British and Indian troops who participated in the Capture of Seringapatam during the 4th Mysore War. The front side of the medal depicts a powerful British lion standing tall over Tipu Sultan's tiger, representing the victory achieved by British forces. The Arabic inscription on the pennon reads "The Victorious Lion of God" further emphasizing their triumph. On the reverse side, an intricate illustration portrays Seringapatam fortress under attack. A Persian inscription below states that it was captured on the divinely ordained day of Zikadah, 1213 of Hegira. Available in various materials such as gold, silver gilt, silver, bronze, and pewter; this particular print features a stunning gold medal with its accompanying ribbon. Another version produced at Calcutta Mint is slightly smaller and available only in gold and silver. With its rich historical significance tied to colonial India and showcasing elements from both British Raj and Indian culture, this Seringapatam Medal serves as a testament to bravery and military excellence.
