EDITORS COMMENTS
In this photograph, we are transported back to June 1922 at the London Zoo. The image captures a significant moment as Syed Ali, a native Mahout from India, is seen training Indiarani, a female Asian Elephant. Surrounding them are other staff members and keepers who eagerly observe the training session. Indiarani was gifted to the zoo by H. H. Sir Jitendra Narayan, the 23rd Maharaja of Cooch Behar on July 16th, 1920. To ensure her proper care and development in her new home, Syed Ali was brought all the way from India to train her. The photo showcases an incredible bond between man and animal as Syed Ali guides Indiarani through various exercises. It is evident that both trainer and elephant share a deep connection built on trust and understanding. As we gaze upon this historical moment frozen in time, we can't help but appreciate the dedication of these individuals towards wildlife conservation and education. Their efforts not only contribute to our understanding of these majestic creatures but also inspire future generations to protect their natural habitats. This photograph serves as a reminder of the important role zoos play in preserving endangered species while providing valuable insights into their behavior for scientific research purposes.
