Page from Mirabilia Romae, Historia et Descriptio Urbis Romae by Pseudo-Aegidius Romanus, published by Andreas Freitag, Rome, not before 1485 and not after 1489 (woodcut)

472851 Page from Mirabilia Romae, Historia et Descriptio Urbis Romae by Pseudo-Aegidius Romanus, published by Andreas Freitag, Rome, not before 1485 and not after 1489 (woodcut) by Italian School, (15th century); 14x10 cm; Private Collection; (add.info.: Copy of the earliest printed guide-book, a practical guide to pilgrim sites in the eternal city. Its wallet style is particularly evocative, being light, flexible and well suited to fit the pocket of a contemporary pilgrim (see 472852).
Mirabilia Romae refers to two distinct texts, which have been subsumed under one title, owing to their transmission together in many manuscripts. The Mirabilia proper is on the wonders of Rome, and the Historia et Descriptio is, as its title indicates, a history and guide to the holy city. Although its ultimate aim was devotional in that it facilitated pilgrims worship in churches around the city, it contains much secular, even art historical, detail in its descriptions of more than 80 churches and the relics contained therein.
The woodcuts used here are cut down from a German-language blockbook edition of c.1475.); Photo © Christies Images

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a page from the renowned "Mirabilia Romae, Historia et Descriptio Urbis Romae" by Pseudo-Aegidius Romanus. Published in Rome by Andreas Freitag between 1485 and 1489, this woodcut print is a true treasure of Italian artistry from the 15th century. Measuring at just 14x10 cm, this private collection piece holds immense historical significance as it represents one of the earliest printed guide-books ever created. Designed to assist pilgrims on their spiritual journey through Rome, its practicality is evident in its wallet-style format - light, flexible, and easily fitting into the pocket of a contemporary traveler. The "Mirabilia Romae" encompasses two distinct texts that have been merged under one title due to their frequent transmission together in manuscripts. The first part focuses on the wonders of Rome while the second part serves as both a history and guide to the holy city. While primarily intended for devotional purposes, aiding pilgrims in their worship at various churches around Rome, it also offers valuable secular information including detailed descriptions of over 80 churches and their revered relics. The woodcuts featured here are repurposed from a German-language blockbook edition dating back to approximately 1475. Their inclusion adds an extra layer of artistic charm and cultural exchange to this remarkable piece. Captured beautifully by Bridgeman Images for Fine Art Finder, this print transports viewers back in time with its intricate details and rich historical context.
