Patience on a Monument, published by Hannah Humphrey in 1791 (hand-coloured etching)
NCO191231 Patience on a Monument, published by Hannah Humphrey in 1791 (hand-coloured etching) by Gillray, James (1757-1815); Courtesy of the Warden and Scholars of New College, Oxford; (add.info.: Lady Cecilia Johnston (d.1817) is in profile, seated on a large golden chamber pot. Her brow is slightly furrowed and her gaze intensely focused. She rests her chin in her hand, her elbow propped upon her knee; the other hand falls in front of the pot and holds a piece of tissue that says " Tranquility." Behind the pot a young winged cherub covers his nose. At Johnstones feet lay a skull and cross bones, the lightly colored live version of the face next to the skulls with eyes wide open and eyebrows raised up at the figure on the pot. The monument is raised on a stone foundation, on which a verse:
By Patience Minds an Equal Temper Know, Nor swell too high, nor sink too low;
Patience the fiercest grief can charm, And fates severest rage disarm;
Patience can soften pain to ease, And make despair and madness please
This divine Cecilia found. And to her Husbands ears, confine the sound. ); English, out of copyright

EDITORS COMMENTS
This hand-coloured etching, titled "Patience on a Monument" was published by Hannah Humphrey in 1791. Created by the talented artist James Gillray, it showcases Lady Cecilia Johnston seated gracefully on a magnificent golden chamber pot. Lady Johnston's expression is one of deep concentration as she rests her chin upon her hand, gazing intently ahead. Intriguingly, a young winged cherub stands behind the pot with his nose covered, indicating an unpleasant odor emanating from it. At Lady Johnston's feet lies a skull and crossbones symbolizing mortality and reminding us of life's transience. The monument itself is elevated on a sturdy stone foundation and features an accompanying verse that speaks to the power of patience in maintaining equanimity amidst life's trials and tribulations. It emphasizes how patience can soothe even the most intense grief and disarm fate's harshest rage. Lady Cecilia Johnston discovered this divine quality within herself, using it to bring tranquility to her husband's ears alone. The juxtaposition between the serene figure atop the chamber pot and the lively face beside the skulls adds both humor and depth to this thought-provoking artwork. Courtesy of New College Oxford, this print offers viewers not only visual delight but also contemplation on themes such as patience, mortality, and finding solace in challenging times.
