7339276 Astrolabe: detail obverse, c.1552 (bronze) by Gemini, Thomas (c.1515-62) & Sutton, Henry (c.1624-65); 35.2x0 cm; National Maritime Museum, London, UK; (add.info.: Creator: Thomas Gemini; Henry Sutton
The importance of this astrolabe lies in its Royal provenance and the astrological information it contains on the reverse. It was once believed to have been made for Queen Elizabeth on account of the inscribed royal arms flanked by ER on the back of the instrument. However, recent research concludes that it was actually constructed for her half-brother, Edward VI. Only the throne, limb and back of this instrument survive - the rete, plates, alidade and rule have been discarded.); © National Maritime Museum, Greenwich, London

EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning print captures the intricate details of an astrolabe dating back to 1552, created by Thomas Gemini and Henry Sutton. Measuring at 35.2 cm in diameter, this bronze astrolabe is housed at the National Maritime Museum in London, UK.
What makes this astrolabe truly special is its royal provenance and the wealth of astrological information it contains on its reverse side. Initially believed to have been made for Queen Elizabeth I due to the inscribed royal arms flanked by 'ER', recent research has revealed that it was actually crafted for her half-brother, Edward VI.
While only the throne, limb, and back of this instrument remain intact today - with elements such as the rete, plates, alidade, and rule having been lost over time - its historical significance cannot be understated. Used as a multi-functional tool for astronomy and navigation purposes during the 16th century, this astrolabe serves as a tangible link to our past understanding of celestial mapping and measurement.
The vibrant colors captured in this print bring out the beauty and complexity of this ancient tool, showcasing its importance in both scientific exploration and artistic craftsmanship.
