Both Henry VI and Queen Margaret were present at the battle of Hexham. Following the defeat of the Lancastrian army by the Yorkists, the Queen and her son, Edward, Prince of Wales, were said to have taken refuge in the woods about Hexham until her escape to Flanders. Bands of robbers frequented these woods, and it is said that they went to Hexham market, to the number of one hundred at a time, to rob the townspeople. EDITORS COMMENTS
This lithograph captures the dramatic meeting between Margaret of Anjou and a Hexham robber in 1464. The scene depicts Queen Margaret and her son, Edward, Prince of Wales, seeking refuge in the woods after their defeat by the Yorkists at the battle of Hexham. As they hide from their enemies, bands of robbers lurk in the shadows, ready to prey on unsuspecting townspeople.
In this momentous encounter, we see Queen Margaret confronting one of these robbers face to face. The tension is palpable as she stands her ground with regal poise while the robber eyes her warily. Despite their opposing positions in society, there is a sense of mutual respect between them as they navigate this dangerous game of survival.
The intricate details and expressive faces captured by artist William Christian Symons bring this historical event to life with striking realism. The contrast between light and shadow adds depth to the composition, drawing viewers into the unfolding drama.
This print serves as a powerful reminder of the tumultuous times during the Wars of Roses and highlights Margaret's resilience in facing adversity head-on. It is a testament to her strength and determination amidst chaos and uncertainty.
