Battle of Talavera, 1809 (aquatint)
5920006 Battle of Talavera, 1809 (aquatint) by Unknown Artist, (19th century); National Army Museum, London; (add.info.: Battle of Talavera, 1809.
Coloured aquatint, artist unknown.
The Battle of Talavera on 27-28 July 1809 took place to the south west of Madrid. An Anglo-Spanish army of 50, 000 men commanded by Sir Arthur Wellesley and the Spanish General Gregorio de la Cuesta, faced 46, 000 Frenchmen under Marshal Claude Victor and the French King of Spain, Joseph Bonaparte. One of the bloodiest battles of the war, Talavera was something of a stalemate. Although the French withdrew from the field,
Wellesley was forced to return with his force to Portugal after another French army under Marshal Soult threatened his lines of communication. Further operations were also restricted by the lack of co-operation between the British and their Spanish allies.); eNational Army Museum; out of copyright

EDITORS COMMENTS
This aquatint print depicts the historic Battle of Talavera, which took place in 1809. The artist behind this masterpiece remains unknown, but their skillful use of color brings to life the intensity and chaos of this significant event. The battle unfolded to the southwest of Madrid, where an Anglo-Spanish army led by Sir Arthur Wellesley and General Gregorio de la Cuesta faced off against a formidable French force commanded by Marshal Claude Victor and Joseph Bonaparte, the French King of Spain. With a total of 50,000 men on one side and 46,000 on the other, Talavera became one of the bloodiest battles during this war. Despite both sides suffering heavy casualties, neither emerged as a clear victor. Although the French eventually withdrew from the field, Wellesley was compelled to retreat back to Portugal due to threats from another French army under Marshal Soult that endangered his supply lines. One notable aspect that hindered further operations was the lack of cooperation between British forces and their Spanish allies. This discord limited their ability to capitalize on any potential advantage gained during battle. This remarkable print serves as a reminder not only of the fierce struggle that occurred at Talavera but also highlights how political alliances can shape military outcomes. Preserved by London's National Army Museum and made available through Bridgeman Images' Fine Art Finder collection, this artwork offers viewers a glimpse into history while honoring those who fought valiantly in this pivotal moment
