Headquarters staff, Kabul, 1880 (b / w photo)

5930239 Headquarters staff, Kabul, 1880 (b/w photo) by Burke, John (fl.1878-79); National Army Museum, London; (add.info.: Headquarters staff, Kabul, 1880.
Photograph by John Burke, 2nd Afghan War (1878-1880), 1880.
In 1880, the headquarters staff of the 7000-strong British Kabul field force was reasonably compact. Among the sitters, other than General Frederick Sleigh Roberts (third from right, middle row), perhaps the most notable is Lieutenant (later Colonel Sir) Neville Chamberlain (1856-1944), Assistant Political Officer (seated on ground, centre), who had invented the game of snooker in 1875.

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the headquarters staff of Kabul in 1880 during the Second Afghan War. The image, taken by John Burke, showcases a compact group of individuals who were part of the 7000-strong British Kabul field force. Among them is General Frederick Sleigh Roberts, positioned third from right in the middle row. However, it is Lieutenant Neville Chamberlain who stands out as one of the most notable figures in this photograph. Seated on the ground at the center, Chamberlain would later become Colonel Sir Neville Chamberlain and was known for inventing the game of snooker back in 1875. The composition portrays a sense of unity and organization within this military setting. Each member exudes a certain level of professionalism and dedication to their roles within army organization. This historical snapshot provides us with a glimpse into an important moment during British involvement in Afghanistan. This print is now housed at London's National Army Museum and belongs to an album containing sixty photographs by John Burke. Its presence serves as a testament to both Burke's skill as a photographer and his documentation of significant events during that time period.
