EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the essence of a Kutchi (Gipsy) Village and encampment near Dakka in 1878. Taken by photographer John Burke during the 2nd Afghan War, this image offers a glimpse into the lives of these nomadic herders who traversed between Afghanistan and British India with their animals. Accompanying Lieutenant-General Sir Sam Browne's Peshawar Valley Field Force as an unofficial photographer, Burke had the opportunity to document various landscapes and tribes along their journey through the Khyber pass towards Jalalabad. Dakka, situated at the western end of the pass, provided him with this scene. The photograph showcases a cluster of tents that form the village encampment against a backdrop of rugged terrain. The simplicity of these accommodations is juxtaposed against nature's grandeur. It invites us to contemplate how people adapt to their surroundings and forge connections within communities despite living transient lives. This historical snapshot not only preserves an important moment in time but also sheds light on cultural diversity and societal dynamics during this period. Through photography, Burke immortalizes both people and culture while capturing topographical details that enhance our understanding of past civilizations. As we gaze upon this remarkable image from Fine Art Finder's collection, we are reminded of photography's power to transcend time, bridging gaps between generations and cultures alike.
