EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a mesmerizing street scene in Jalalabad, Afghanistan, back in 1879. Taken by the talented photographer John Burke during the Second Afghan War, this image offers a glimpse into the daily life of the city during that time. After successfully capturing Fort Ali Masjid and forcing their way through the Khyber Pass, Lieutenant-General Sir Sam Browne's Peshawar Valley Field Force had occupied Jalalabad. As they waited for the Afghans to accept peace terms, Burke accompanied them and took several captivating pictures of the city. In this particular photograph, we see Jalalabad's main street with its bustling covered bazaar. The focal point is a sentry positioned on the right side of the frame, likely belonging to the 2nd Gurkhas regiment. His presence adds an intriguing element to an otherwise ordinary street scene. The composition beautifully showcases both architectural details and human activity within this historical setting. Every corner tells a story - from people going about their daily routines to merchants selling their goods under colorful awnings. Thanks to Bridgeman Images' preservation efforts, we can now appreciate this remarkable piece of history captured by John Burke over 140 years ago. It serves as a testament to his skill as a photographer and allows us to reflect upon how much has changed since that time in Jalalabad's vibrant streetscape.
