Galileo Galilei (1564-1642), c.1602-07 (oil on canvas)

7337903 Galileo Galilei (1564-1642), c.1602-07 (oil on canvas) by Apollodoro, Francesco (1531-1612); 66x53.3 cm; National Maritime Museum, London, UK; (add.info.: Creator: Francesco Apollodoro
A half-length portrait dressed in black, probably painted when Galileo was about 42 years old. He wears his hair closely cropped and has a beard. The sitter is slightly to left and looks directly at the viewer. The portrait is significant since it is thought to be the earliest original one of Galileo, the Italian astronomer and experimental philosopher who invented the refracting telescope. This made it possible for him to see that the Moon had mountains and Jupiter had satellites, although his astronomical theories brought him into famous controversy with the Catholic church.); © National Maritime Museum, Greenwich, London

EDITORS COMMENTS
This portrait captures the essence of Galileo Galilei, a pioneering figure in the realms of astronomy and science during the 17th century. Painted by Francesco Apollodoro, this oil on canvas piece showcases Galileo at around 42 years old, dressed in somber black attire with closely cropped hair and a distinguished beard. Galileo's piercing gaze directly engages the viewer, hinting at his intellectual curiosity and unwavering determination to challenge conventional beliefs. As the inventor of the refracting telescope, he revolutionized our understanding of celestial bodies by discovering mountains on the Moon and satellites orbiting Jupiter. Despite his groundbreaking discoveries, Galileo faced intense scrutiny from religious authorities due to his astronomical theories conflicting with established dogma. This portrait serves as a poignant reminder of his enduring legacy as both a scholar and scientist who fearlessly pursued truth in defiance of societal norms. Displayed at the National Maritime Museum in London, this early depiction is believed to be one of the first original portraits of Galileo. It immortalizes him as an iconic figure whose contributions continue to inspire generations of thinkers and innovators worldwide.
