The Battle of Vigo Bay, 12 October 1702, c.1702 (oil on canvas)

7337809 The Battle of Vigo Bay, 12 October 1702, c.1702 (oil on canvas) by Bakhuizen, Ludolf (1630-1708) ; 48.3x68.6 cm; National Maritime Museum, London, UK; (add.info.: Creator: Ludolf Bakhuizen
This depiction shows the beginning of the action. The troops can be seen in the foreground of the picture with the fleet approaching the harbour beyond. The battle is viewed from the south shore of Vigo Bay where troops are landing and marching off to the right. Just about to break the boom in starboard-broadside view and firing her bow chasers, is the 'Torbay', followed by units of the allied fleet including the 'Zeven Provincien', 92 guns. Following the latter, however, on the left of the picture, in starboard-quarter view, is the fleet flagship 'Royal Sovereign', flying the red ensign. Although this is shown as the principal ship in the composition, she was not involved in the action.); © National Maritime Museum, Greenwich, London

Painted by Ludolf Bakhuizen, this historical artwork showcases the beginning stages of the battle with troops in the foreground and a fleet approaching the harbor in the background. The scene is set at Vigo Bay, where troops are seen landing and marching off to the right. The 'Torbay' ship can be seen breaking through a boom and firing her bow chasers, followed by other units of the allied fleet including the powerful 'Zeven Provincien' with its 92 guns.
