EDITORS COMMENTS
This lithograph captures the momentous event of King Erik IX, also known as Saint Erik, landing on the coast of Finland in 1157. Accompanied by a considerable army and the Bishop of Upsala, an Englishman, Erik led an invasion that resulted in the conquest and baptism of the Finns. After leaving Bishop Henry behind to solidify their conversion, tragedy struck when he was killed and later canonized as St Henry, becoming the patron saint of Finland. The scene depicted in this print is filled with historical significance as it showcases a pivotal moment in Finnish history where Christianity took root in the region. The dramatic coastline serves as a backdrop to this monumental event, emphasizing both the power dynamics at play and the spiritual transformation occurring within these lands. Through intricate details and masterful composition, artist Fernand Le Quesne brings this historical narrative to life with striking realism. This image from Hutchinson's History of Nations offers a glimpse into a crucial chapter in European history that continues to resonate today. As we gaze upon this lithograph, we are transported back to a time when faith and conquest intertwined on the shores of Finland centuries ago.
