La Ramasse, 1817 (hand coloured etching on paper)
7485286 La Ramasse, 1817 (hand coloured etching on paper) by Mesangere, Pierre de La (1761-1831); 21x28 cm; Ironbridge Gorge Museum Trust, Telford, Shropshire, UK; (add.info.: Artist: Pierre Joseph Antoine de la Mesangere (1761-1830)
This was originally published by Pierre Joseph Antoine de la Mesangere (1761-1830), better known by the name of Le Mesangere, as plate number 105 in Le Bon Genre, his first edition of hand-coloured engravings showing French life and fashion, published in 1817. The idea of a roller coaster began in St. Petersburg, Russia, in the 18th century; the snow-covered constructions were built in Russia for sledding but these examples used cars running on rails. By the early 19th century they had spread to European capitals and in 1812 a Company called Les Montagnes Russes constructed some in the Belleville district of Paris. The location of the Belleville barrier is on the boulevard of the same name at rue du Faubourg-du-Temple in Paris.); © Ironbridge Gorge Museum Trust

EDITORS COMMENTS
This hand-colored etching on paper, titled La Ramasse and created by Pierre Joseph Antoine de la Mesangere in 1817, captures a moment of French life and fashion from the early 19th century. Originally published as part of Le Bon Genre, a series showcasing various aspects of French society, this print offers a glimpse into the leisure activities enjoyed during that time.
The image depicts individuals enjoying what appears to be a roller coaster ride in the Belleville district of Paris. Roller coasters were still a relatively new concept at this point in history, with their origins traced back to Russia in the 18th century. The thrill-seeking nature of these rides quickly spread to European capitals like Paris, where companies like Les Montagnes Russes began constructing similar attractions for public enjoyment.
As we observe the figures on this roller coaster ride through Mesangere's intricate detailing and vibrant colors, we are transported back to a time when such amusements were novel and exciting. This print serves as both a historical document and an artistic representation of the evolving social landscape in France during the early 1800s.
